New book chapter contribution by lead author Mr. Derrick Allotey shares inisght on sustaniability and industry 4.0. A summary of this publication is presented below

Background Industry 4.0 has been recognized as the pathway to enhance production processes and increase productivity in the manufacturing industry. The food industry, among other thriving industries, is making efforts towards catching up with this industrial revolution. The shift to this fourth industrial revolution to apply the principles of cyber physical systems, internet-oriented technologies and smart systems with enhanced human–machine interaction comes not only with economic, environmental and social implications but also with a techno-managerial aspect where both food quality/safety and labour safety are considered. The poultry industry is rapidly making strides to reimagine its future through several innovations that farm both chickens and data with the aim of meeting the sustainability challenge.

Goal/objective This chapter therefore examines the converging points of sustainability and Industry 4.0 technologies in poultry processing plants. First, we present the advances in smart technologies and systems in poultry processing including steps such as kill, evisceration, inspection, deboning and packaging. These innovative ideas can significantly mainstream the shift towards the Industry 4.0 revolution to ensure the food quality and protect the labour safety. We then present a comparative analysis of the sustainability implications of these Industry 4.0 technologies and systems in poultry processing at varying implementation levels. We illustrate the enviro-economics trade-offs of the industry 4.0 adoption at the different scales and the relevant strategies to maintain techno-managerial efficiency.
